IRANIANS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Rain takes its toll on SA, 30 rescued in Lesotho

August 04, 2006, 18:00

Damage caused by torrential rains that battered the Eastern and Southern Cape regions is expected to run into millions of rands. The deluge of rain left thousands of people temporarily homeless while scores of others lost everything. As the the rains pelted down, snow trapped more than 30 people, including South Africans, in the Maluti Mountains since Tuesday.

They have now been brought to safety after a joint rescue operation between the South African Air Force and the Lesotho Air Wing. Poor visibility delayed the rescue and it is still unclear if more people are missing. Some of them were trapped for three days in their vehicles. One of them a South African, on his way back to Maseru. He and a Lesotho taxi driver got trapped in Thaba Putsoa area, south-east of Maseru.

A single blanket for warmth and snow to eat kept them alive. His plea to the South African government through SABC news probably saved his life. Shadrack Mosoeu, a survivor, says he thought he was going to die. "I am very happy now and I will only believe that I was rescued when I wake up tomorrow morning," Mosoeu said.

Two choppers from the South African Air Force base outside Bloemfontein helped with the rescue mission. Captain Henk Pieterson, a pilot, says at least 20 people were moved to safety. Mainly elderly residents trapped in mountain villages were brought to nearby Lesotho towns for safety. No one sustained serious injuries.

۹۰۰ ostriches killed in Little Karoo floods

August 04, 2006, 17:15

It has now been established that at least 900 ostriches have died in the Little Karoo floods. The number is expected to increase as more farmers are expected to hand in reports. Hein Jonker, chairperson of Agri Klein Karoo, says the floods came only a few weeks after the European Union ban of all ostrich meat from the area following the outbreak of bird flu. Jonker says this was a double blow for the farmers.

"It is very difficult for the ostrich farmers at the moment. Financially everyone is struggling and we will be asking from the government for assistance," Jonker said.

Mpanza - Sounds of Zulu war dances and a military parade filled the air on Sunday as South Africans hailed a forgotten Zulu hero whose rebellion a century ago sowed the first seeds of black resistance.

Soldiers and Zulu warriors, dressed in traditional leopard skins, joined thousands to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Bhambatha rebellion, a little-known event that had huge ramifications in South African history.

President Thabo Mbeki said: "We are here today to pay tribute to the great heroes of our people like Chief Bhambatha kaMancinza,".

"Today we are free because of what leaders like he did and we must never forget what we owe them," he said at a ceremony at Bhambatha's traditional home of Mpanza, in eastern KwaZulu-Natal.

The ceremony, attended by high-profile dignitaries, including former deputy president Jacob Zuma, Zulu king Goodwill Zwelithini and members of the Bhambatha's Zondi clan, also saw Bhambatha posthumously reinstated as a Zulu chief

Sudanese refugees have suffered from the war in the country

Cabinet is to be asked to approve an African Union request to South Africa to send military observers to monitor a ceasefire in Sudan. Sam Mkhwanazi, the defence spokesperson, said the AU requested 10 observers from South Africa earlier this month. The request was forwarded by way of the department of foreign affairs and the Presidency.

Mkhwanazi said Mosiuoa Lekota, the defence minister, would be taking the request to Cabinet soon.

In the meantime, the SA National Defence Force has identified personnel who could be tasked as military observers should Cabinet approve. Lekota earlier this week mooted the deployment of peace keepers to Sudan, where the AU this week set up a headquarters from where it would monitor a ceasefire between Darfur rebels and Khartoum government troops as well as allied militiamen known as the Janjawi.

The fighting, that started in January last year, has so far claimed around 10 000 lives and rendered over a million people refugees, mostly inside Sudan but also in neighbouring Chad. The United Nations has described the conflict as the world's worst current humanitarian crisis.

Reports say the observer force will muster around 120 and would include teams from Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana and Namibia. South Africa already has peace keepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi and observers in Uganda, Eritrea and Ethiopia.

The ceasefire the AU team is to monitor is separate from a peace deal struck at the weekend ending a long-running civil war between Khartoum and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army led by John Garang. He is currently touring southern Sudan to explain a series of accords he has signed over the last two years with the government to end more than two decades of devastating civil war.

President George W. Bush and his wife Laura pay their last respects

President George W. Bush and his wife Laura pay their last respects

America's long goodbye to Ronald Reagan reached a majestic climax today with a solemn state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral attended by scores of world leaders past and present. The ceremony capped six days of mourning and rosy remembrance for the 40th president of the United States, who died last Saturday at age 93 after a 10-year struggle with Alzheimer's Disease.

He had bid farewell to the American people in a moving letter revealing his illness 10 years ago and had since lived in seclusion, cared for by his wife, Nancy. Veterans of the Cold War struggle against communism that Reagan helped end were prominent at the funeral, attended by 25 current heads of state or government, including President Thabo Mbeki, 14 foreign ministers and 11 former heads of state.

All four living former US presidents - Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, George Bush and Bill Clinton - filed into the massive faux Gothic structure on a hill over Washington, which took 83 years to build and was only completed in 1990. Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the Soviet Union who crossed swords with Reagan at memorable summits in the 1980s and then allowed the Cold War to end peacefully months after Reagan left office in 1989, represented Russia.

A bell tolled and rain fell as the hearse bearing Reagan's body arrived at the cathedral from Capitol Hill, where it had laid in state for two days while tens of thousands of people filed past. Onlookers lined the 6kms route from the Capitol to the Cathedral standing several rows deep. Police had to prevent the crowd spilling into the streets.

After the funeral, Reagan's body was to be flown back to California for a private sunset burial attended by family and special guests on the grounds of his presidential library overlooking desert hills just north of Los Angeles. Government departments, the New York Stock Exchange and many businesses were closed as Americans paused to pay tribute to their 40th president.

Police used stun grenades to clear the roads this morning

Taxi drivers in KwaZulu-Natal have been warned that the blockading of public roads is illegal and will not be tolerated, the provincial MEC for transport, safety and security said today. Bheki Cele was responding to the more than 800 protesters and 150 taxis that blocked roads in and around Durban this morning.

Cele said those who were involved in such activities "would face the full might of the law".

Promising that it would never happen again, he said: "No government will tolerate unnecessary inconvenience caused to its citizens. The blockading of public roads is illegal and those involved as well as those who are contemplating such activities should immediately desist. We will use all our resources to remove these people and their vehicles. There will be no negotiations on the road and those involved will be arrested and face the full might of the law."

Kwazi Mbanjwa, the head of the provincial department of transport, reiterated Cele's words, warning that those involved in the blockading of roads would face maximum sentences, including stiff penalties for the towing of their vehicles and pound fees. "Even the leadership of the taxi industry in the province was not aware of this blockade. It seems that the taxi drivers just decided to do their own thing. If people have problems they must use the correct channels and procedures to address such problems. This will not be tolerated and we are working together with the SAPS and the Ethekwini municipality to ensure that this never happens again."

Durban police confirmed that 12 drivers taking part in Monday's blockade had been arrested and 18 taxis were impounded. Vincent Mdunge, a police spokesperson, says the blockade, which caused chaos as commuters could not use the M4 to and from Umlazi and Durban International Airport early this morning, had been removed.

Mdunge said the taxi drivers were protesting against the city council and police, claiming they were being stopped and fined unnecessarily on a regular basis. Some drivers claimed they were ticketed for about five offences in one day. Police dispersed the crowd and cleared the highway after using stun grenades.

Cattle in the Eastern Cape suffer TB outbreak

There has been an outbreak of Tuberculosis (TB) in the Eastern Cape. Four farms belonging to one farmer have been placed under quarantine. Hundreds of TB infected cattle from the Tsitsikamma in the Eastern Cape are being slaughtered.

Every two years dairy cows are routinely tested for TB. This time round, they tested positive. There is no cure for the disease in animals,
they are now being culled at the Eastern Province Livestock Agency abattoir in Port Elizabeth.

Tissue samples have been sent to Onderstepoort to determine the strain. TB affects mainly the lungs, but it can also spread.

Werner Kruger, a state veterinarian said:" What I've seen is that the spread of the disease was very severe and rapid because most of their lungs were infected, about 75%, whereas the carcasses itself only about four per cent were directly affected, so I think the infection itself hasn't been around for long, possibly within the past year."

TB can be transmitted through unpasteurised milk. This airborne disease can easily spread to other cattle. More than 300 infected animals have already been slaughtered. Another 150 will be culled next week.

SA troops in Burundi could be scaled down

The number of South African troops in Burundi could be scaled down following creation of a United Nations (UN) operation in Burundi, named ONUB. At the end of last week the UN Security Council voted unanimously to create ONUB. In practice it will mean that from June, African forces deployed in Burundi will operate under the flag of the UN.

Today Mosiuoa Lekota, the defence minister, called the Resolution a milestone, saying: "Few people realise the milestone that this represents. Earlier when leaders of our continent sought to persuade the international community to intervene in Burundi, the international community said they could not risk going into it."

South Africa will continue to lead the mission in Burundi. There will be a regional summit on Burundi in Dar es Salaam on June 5.

Lekota added: "Our men and women there will wear the blue berets. Funding becomes the sole responsibility of the UN."

He says the priority will become the integration of Burundi's various forces.

South Africa currently has 1 600 men and women in uniform in Burundi. The funding, from UN coffers this time, will make the peacekeeping less painful.

Global Fund could withdraw R1 billion of assistance

May 24, 2004, 17:28

The Global Fund to fight Aids, TB and Malaria has threatened to withdraw approximately one billion rand of assistance from the South African government. The organisation accused government of holding up its health funding meant for various aids prevention projects in the country.

Lovelife - an aids prevention programme - is one of the organisations waiting for the money from the Global Fund. Angela Stewart-Buchanan, a member of loveLife, said: "Lovelife remains committed to the Global Fund in achieving its objectives, but we do find ourselves in a very difficult situation given all the delays in the funding of really being able to achieve those objectives. In fact we are struggling to implement."

The Global Fund - which was established in 2001, primarily to fund health projects in Africa - voiced its unhappiness at a high level meeting in London to discuss the Aids crisis in Africa.

Richard Feachem, of the Global Fund, said: "We're in almost daily contact with officials in the ministry of finance and the ministry of health about the need to move that money quickly to KwaZulu-Natal to Western Cape, to Soul City, to Lovelife, to allow them rapidly to do the work that desperately needs to be done."

The Global Fund is now looking at other options.

Feachem added: "It's intolerable that the money gets stuck in Pretoria, and if Pretoria can't move it for any reason, then we will simply withdraw it and establish direct relationships with the people actually doing the work."

Johannesburg - Screeching of tyres and spinning cars added to the wild celebrations in Soweto on Saturday minutes after South Africa was declared the host country for the soccer World Cup in 2010.

Huge crowds attended the nerve-wracking proceedings in Soweto.

"Akulalwa namhlanje - No sleeping today," said a jubilant fan dancing alongside a spinning car.

Spinning cars is virtually a Soweto tradition when it comes to celebrating any major victory in South Africa.

"I feel like I am in a new country altogether," said Sphiwe Khumalo, gulping at a cold beer.

Passing motorists, including members of the police and the Metro police, were asked to show their prowess in spinning vehicles

A North West school pupil committed suicide after shooting dead a fellow pupil at the Nelson Mandela Secondary School around lunchtime today, police said. David Serepa, a spokesperson, said police were investigating how the boy got the gun, which allegedly belonged to a member of his family.

He said the 16-year-old boy opened fire on a 17-year-old girl before shooting himself in the head. Both died on the scene, Serepa said. Teachers and other pupils were shocked because there was no argument between the two before the shooting, Serepa said. The motive was unknown.

Serepa said he could not confirm whether the two were boyfriend and girlfriend. The school is situated at the Ikageneng village in the Dinokana area, Zeerust, in the North West. The incident happened around 1pm today in full view of teachers and other pupils, he said

South Africa is the favourite to host the 2010 Soccer World Cup

May 15, 2004, 05:43

South Africa started and ended yesterday as slight favourites to win the race to host the 2010 World Cup finals. However, excellent final presentations from Morocco and Egypt suggest that the vote could be close.

Tunisia yesterday withdrew its candidature at the last minute. Experts say this is likely to benefit Morocco's bid to win the right to stage the finals. Libya's presentation merely confirmed their status as rank outsiders.

The final decision on which African country will host the tournament will be announced by FIFA president Sepp Blatter at noon today.

The government says some 15 million people in southern Africa need food aid because they have no capacity to feed themselves.

In a statement ahead of a special summit of the 14-member Southern African Development Community (SADC) on food security in Tanzania, the government blamed food problems in the region on poor crops over the past decade and a big decline in aid flows to agriculture.

Jacob Zuma, the deputy president, and Thoko Didiza, the agriculture minister, will represent South Africa at the two-day Dar es Salaam summit from Friday. The summit would endorse a regional action plan to revamp farm production, it added.
